Not long ago, Kioxia was the first company to develop a 24Gb/s SAS (SAS 4.0) drive, which has been highly praised by the world’s disk controller manufacturers. As it turns out, the engineers at Kioxia are not slowing down and have unveiled the market’s first EDSFF (Enterprise and Data Center Standard Form Factor) SSD designed with PCIe 5.0 technology.
This November. KIOXIA announced the industry’s first line of E3.S Enterprise and Data Center Standard Form Factor (EDSFF) SSDs designed using PCIe 5.0 technology. The new KIOXIA CD7 E3.S series introduces us to a whole new range of flash memory capabilities used in servers and storage. The CD7 E3.S series increases the density of flash memory per disk, thereby providing optimised energy efficiency and a significant reduction in TCO. The E3 EDSFF family is optimised for customers who expect the highest performance from the product. EDSFF supports a range of new devices and applications. It also provides better airflow, support for higher E3.S power consumption than 2.5-inch SSDs, and improved signal integrity. EDSFF guarantees the performance promised by PCIe 5.0 technology and more.

Key features of the new CD7 E3.S series include:
- EDSFF E3.S format with capacities up to 7.68 TB.
- Developed and dedicated for the latest PCIe 5.0 technology and optimised for x2 PCIe.
- Reducing PCIe lines per drive (x2 instead of x4) automatically allows the customer to have more drives in a single machine.
- Based on KIOXIA’s BiCS FLASH™ 3D TLC flash memory.
- Up to 6,450MB/s for reads and 1,050K IOPS for random reads.
- The drives have LEDs in the enclosure that allow you to visually identify the status of the drive, without having to use the existing LED overlays from server vendors (reducing server manufacturing costs).
It’s worth noting that the new disk offerings from Kioxia are currently being tested by server manufacturers, so we can expect detailed information on the performance, results and achievements of the EDSFF PCIe 5.0 SSD in the near future.
